The best information source for futons for sale
and futon frames.
Futon frames give futons their shape, style and function. Before making any purchases, let alone looking for futons
for sale, it is important to understand what types of futon frames there are and what type is best to buy.
The three major types of futon frames are the tri-fold, bi-fold, and loveseat futon frames.
Tri-fold futons The tri-fold frame or A-Frame comes in three sizes: twin, full, and queen. They
are called tri-fold frames because they require that mattress be folded two times when converting from sleeping to
sitting configurations. The tri-fold utilizes the shorter “width” length of the futon when sitting (they are folded
the short way) and thus is more compact. In other words, tri-fold futon frames are usually positioned with the head
of the mattress facing the wall and therefore take up less wall space. This makes tri-fold great for dorm and kids
rooms as well as other places where space is tight.
Bi-fold futons Bi-fold frames are closer to the same shape and size as a traditional sofa and
take up around 75" to 90" of wall space. Unlike the tri-fold futon, they use the longer “length” of the futon for
the leading edge (are folded the long way). Since they are using the longer edge, they only require a single
fold when changing the configuration from sleeping to sitting. Offering more seating space, the bi-fold futon is
more popular than the tri-fold. Bi-folds come in full and queen sizes and typically have arm rests on the outside
of the mattress.
Loveseat futon Loveseat futon frames offer a combination of the bi-fold and tri-fold. They use
two-piece futons to fit a twin of full size bed in minimum possible space (between 45" and 68" inches of wall
space). They offer the perfect combination of style and design for those places where space is the tightest.
Once choosing on a tri-fold or whatever futon frame is best for your needs, one must choose between a metal, wood
or hybrid frame.
Metal futon frames Metal futon frames are the most
durable, affordable and come on a wide variety of styles and sizes. Being the easiest to disassemble and move, they
are ideal for people on the move. If choosing a metal frame, it is important to make sure the metal used is not too
thin and the welds do not look sloppy or weak.
Wooden futon frames If look and style are the most important factors, a wood frame is the best bet. For long life, the frame should always be constructed of
hardwood such as cherry, oak, ash, maple, beech, and not weak woods like white pine and aspen. The connections
should be metal on metal. The long boards called cross or stretcher rails that connect the arms should also be made
of hardwood. Finally, keep in mind that good proportions, clean lines and a high quality, smooth finish can make a
huge difference on how furniture like futons look in a room.
Hybrid frames Hybrids frames are newer but a hit in the market. They often combine wooden arms
and a metal center or body section. As with the wood and metal frames, check things such as the wood quality,
joints and welds to insure they are of good quality.
Whatever your choice when looking for futons for sale, make sure it is made only after you thoroughly understand
the types of futon frames and how they are constructed.
