Futons for SaleThe best information source for futons and futons for
sale
We all spend about a third of our lives sleeping so choosing the right futon mattress is no small matter. There are
a number of factors one must consider when looking for futons for sale to include type, materials, price and
construction to properly make this important choice.
Futon construction
Early futon mattresses were filled with cotton batting and many still are today. Being soft with the ability to
conform to the user, cotton batting still has a wide following. However, it has the disadvantages of being heavy to
move around and compressing from use.
In an effort to extend the life of the mattress, manufacturers started to add new materials like wool and polyester
to the cotton batting to make it last longer. While this did improve the lifespan, manufacturers wanted to make a
lighter futon that would have still greater longevity.
This was realized with foam. Being both lightweight and high density, foam greatly firms up futon mattresses. To
further give their futons a unique feel, manufacturers now also produce mattresses with varying layers of foams of
different densities.
To make futons even more mainstream by appealing to those consumers who still want the feel of more traditional
sofas and mattresses, manufacturers now offer futons with innerspring mattresses. These have a built in hinge that
allows the mattress to be folded in the middle like a traditional futon. They also usually include foam or cotton
to maintain support.
Choosing a mattress
Which type of mattress is best varies greatly with individual needs, tastes and what way the futon will be used.
For example, if use as a bed is going to be a futon’s primary function, then a thicker one should be used.
For comfort, most recommended that the mattresses be at least 6” thick. Anything less, or a cheaper mattress, will
likely cause the user to feel the futon frame. A thicker mattress will provide more comfort, but will be more
difficult to move, fold and will cost more. If the mattress will be used a lot for sleeping and not be folded as
often, then a greater thickness, such as the 9”, is advisable.
A futon that will be utilized both as a couch and a bed is going to go through a lot of folding, and thus should be
more flexible. In this situation, an innerspring mattress or a cotton-polyester blend will work well. Foam is also
a good choice since it conforms to different shapes so well. However, the foam should have a density of 1.2 pounds
or more if you want a futon that will really last and maintain its original feel
Futon mattresses are available in full, queen and twin sizes to match the needs of every situation.
Futons are available for sale from many well-known manufacturers such as Simmons, Beautyrest, and Sealy. Depending
on factors including size, materials and brand name, their prices can range from well under a hundred to hundreds
of dollars.
For those concerned with getting a very healthy night’s sleep, it is easy to find futons made of natural and
organic materials. Many people feel that giving their bodies time to rest free from chemicals helps them feel more
rejuvenated and refreshed.
Whatever futon you choose, be sure to carefully consider all the major factors such as how the futon will used,
optimal materials and desired level of quality.
