Futon Dimensions

Futon dimensions to ensure you purchase the correct size.

If you have decided that you need a futon, you need to understand futon dimensions. This will help make sure that you buy the right type of futon to fit your needs, budget, and room where it will be located.

Sleeping how many?

A futon can sleep one or two people depending on the style. Before you determine what futon to buy, you need to decide the purpose you want the futon to serve. If the guests you normally host are couples, a larger futon is necessary. If you typically have single guests, or children sleepovers, then a small futon will be sufficient.

Standard futon sizes are queen, full, loveseat, twin, single, and chair. All of these futon mattresses have correlations to a mattress for a standard bed.

If you are looking for the futon version of a regular sleeper sofa, then you could purchase either a queen of full futon. A loveseat futon may be able to sleep two people, depending on the style. A single futon can sleep one person, while a chair futon isn’t capable of sleeping an adult.

Futon dimensions

While this information can help with approximate size, it doesn’t offer specific dimensions. There are typical dimensions for each of these types of futon mattresses.

The queen sized mattress is typically 60”x 80” while a full futon mattress is 54” x 75”, and the arms add another 2 inches to the width of the futon. For queen and full mattresses, the arms are the head and footboards. For some futons, it is possible to remove the arms if you want to push the futon against the wall.

If you need to be able to sleep two people on a futon but don’t have a lot of room, a loveseat futon may be the solution. A standard loveseat futon is twenty-one inches shorter than a full mattress. However, a lounger, loveseat futon has an extension that curves under the futon. When it is fully extended, the futon can still sleep two people. When erected as a lounger, it takes up less room than a full futon.

In order to sleep one person a single futon lounger is the best option. Like the loveseat version, the single lounger has an extension to help create a mattress about the size of a cot. A chair futon can’t sleep an adult without an extension or an ottoman.

A chair with an extension is 28” x 75”, the length of a standard single mattress. A standard chair may be able to sleep a child, making it an excellent choice for a child’s bedroom.

Futon alternatives

In order to save room, there are a few options. A cascading mattress can help. A futon with a cascading mattress has a tri-fold frame. The mattress is wider and folds over the frame, similar to a lounger futon with an extension. A cascading mattress is available in queen, full and single sizes.

Split mattresses are a different option. With two mattresses, one is used as the seat cushion and the other as a back cushion. When extended, two single mattresses can create versatile sleeping arrangements.

Futon dimensions vary depending on the style of the futon and size of the mattress. If you need a large futon mattress, but have limited space, a cascading mattress or lounge futon may help. If the room is large enough to hold a standard sleeper sofa, a queen or full futon will offer the most space for guests.
