Caring for Futons

Information on futons and futons for sale

While futons are very economical, they still are an investment that should be properly taken care of. Doing so will greatly increase their lifespan and the level of comfort they provide. When looking for futons for sale, consider their care too.

Futon covers
Futons should always be used with covers. Covers protect futons from wear and stains. They also are a great way to change the appearance of the futon with the seasons and changes in the home. Clean these covers regularly.

Futons that serve as beds should be used with vinyl sheets or mattress pads to protect them from stains. Any sheets and other bedding used with the futon should be kept clean too.

Futon storage
If the futon is not set on a frame, properly fold it up and store it away when it is not in use. This helps protect the futon from the elements and accidents. It makes the home look much tidier too. Also, make sure the floor it is being laid on is kept clean.

Hang the futon out
Futons should also be hung out whenever possible. A few times a year or more is recommended. This will help kill any mould, fungus or anything else that might be growing inside. It will also keep the futon from have a stale oder and give it a fresh smell. Hang the futon out on a dry day, and hit it with a stick if possible to knock off any dirt.

Cleaning futons
While most people do not have big enough washing machines to handle futons, they can be washed. Check with a local cleaner to see if they accept futons and have them washed periodically. For home cleaning without a washing machine, use a scrub brush, laundry detergent and warm water to scrub dirty spots (a rug cleaner may be tried for more serious stains). Then, make sure the futon is thoroughly dried.

For more regular cleanings, use a vacuum to remove any dust or other particles on the futon.

Futon care
Turn and rotate the futon regularly. This extends its lifespan by preventing the wear from being concentrated in one area, keeping the padding evenly distributed and helping to keep the futon properly aired. It may also prevent moisture buildup.

Follow these steps for futon care, and the futon will provide many years of comfortable use. The need to look for the next futon for sale should be kept as far in the future as possible.
