When looking for futons for sale

Whether you own a futon or not, or if you are just doing some research before deciding whether to buy one or not, there is one thing that you should know - a futon can be a great addition to your home. They are really useful pieces of furniture that can double up as a chair/couch and a bed. They can add value to your living space and they help you save space and money. This space saving piece of furniture is of Japanese origin and comes in many shapes and sizes.  Originally meant for the use of the Samurai, this humble piece of furniture has evolved from the spare futons used in earlier days to the more structured western form that it has today. Let us see what makes the futon so useful and welcome in our homes.

Earlier futons reflected the austere lifestyle of the samurai; they simply consisted of a thin mattress, a quilt and a pillow that could be stashed away out of sight - they were usually placed on tatami mats for the use of the warriors desiring to sleep. Futons come in wooden or metal frames nowadays, and come with mattresses that can be folded. When it is necessary to convert it into a bed, all you need to do is to flatten out the futon and the mattress, and voila, there is your bed all ready to receive you. Sometimes, futons can come with double or triple folds and in the form of a loveseat, in an attempt to save space further, but this places restrictions on the thickness of the mattress that can be used and this is a factor to be weighed against the space that you save in buying such compact forms of this versatile piece of furniture. Ease of conversion is also a factor to be considered before getting a futon for sale.

There are two basic materials from which futon frames are made: wood and metal. Pine, oak, rattan, bamboo and unfinished wood are popular choices as are iron and steel. The mattress can come in cotton, foam, polyester, wool and innerspring, or a combination of these materials. There is futon hardware to consider too, mainly the hinges that allow futons to be folded. These are the parts that need to be replaced most often, and it may be best to find stores in your neighborhood that carry them. There are plenty of choices available in the fabric and patterns of the material that covers the mattresses.

In the final analysis, futons are a great buy - they cost less than a third of what a bed can cost and you save money by buying just one piece of furniture rather than two. So, get a couch and a bed in one and add flavor to your home while doing so.
